Permits and family

B permit: grant and extension

A residence permit is always tied to a purpose: a job, self-employment, education, retirement, a family. We start from that purpose to build the file, then make sure it is renewed.

For whom

Who files the application

The employer, for an employee

For salaried work, it is the employer who files the application (Art. 18 FNIA): our full procedure applies. The B permit flat fee covers the other situations of your employees, and the extension of their permit.

The private individual, for themselves

You wish to settle in Switzerland without an employment contract, for self-employment, education or retirement, or you need to extend your permit: the application is yours, and we prepare it with you.

The requirements of the law

The purpose of the stay determines the requirements

A residence permit is granted for a stay of more than one year and for a specific purpose. Depending on that purpose, the law sets distinct requirements.

The extension

The extension deadline

The B permit is of limited duration. Its extension is not automatic, but the law provides for it where there is no ground for revocation.

Our work

What we do for you

  • Identification of the ground for the stay and verification of the requirements attached to it
  • Calendar of the expiry dates and of the extension filing deadline
  • List of the documents required by your canton
  • Drafting of the application and, if necessary, of its supporting statement
  • Filing with the cantonal authority and replies to its requests for further information
  • Follow-up until the decision

The documents

What generally needs to be gathered

  • Valid passport and current residence permit, if any
  • Evidence of the purpose of the stay: contract, business plan, certificate from the school, proof of ties with Switzerland
  • Proof of financial means or income
  • Lease or housing certificate
  • For an extension: certificates on the activity, the absence of social assistance and, where applicable, integration

Fees

Two flat fees, depending on the step

B permit, application

CHF 1,500 to CHF 3,000

flat fee, depending on the purpose of the stay

A first residence permit, or the move from another permit to a B permit. The fee depends on the ground for admission and the number of documents to gather.

  • Review of the ground for admission and the legal requirements attached to it
  • List of documents adapted to the canton of residence or of the position
  • Drafting of the application and its supporting statement
  • Filing and follow-up with the cantonal authority until the decision

Where the B permit is sought for salaried work, the application comes from the employer: the full procedure then applies.

B permit, extension

CHF 600

flat fee per person

The application to extend an existing residence permit, prepared within the time limit set by the ordinance.

  • Check of the expiry date and the filing deadline
  • Verification of the documents the authority expects
  • Preparation and filing of the application
  • Follow-up until the decision

A situation that raises questions (social assistance, unemployment, separation of the couple) may justify a preliminary review, billed separately.

Indicative amounts, excluding VAT (Swiss standard rate of 8.1% since 1 January 2024). They are confirmed in writing before any engagement, on the basis of the actual file. For an employer established abroad, the service is deemed to be supplied abroad within the meaning of art. 8 para. 1 LTVA and the invoice is issued without VAT. For a private individual domiciled abroad, the VAT treatment is specified in the proposal.
