Other residence permits and naturalisation

Facilitated naturalisation, a federal route to open with the right evidence

The spouse of a Swiss citizen and the third-generation foreign national have a more direct procedure: the SEM decides, after consulting the canton. It remains subject to strict requirements, which we verify before filing.

For whom

Three situations, three sets of requirements

The spouse living in Switzerland

You are married to a Swiss citizen, you have lived with them for three years and you have resided five years in Switzerland, including the year before the application. We check the dates and the evidence of your life together.

The spouse living abroad

You live or have lived abroad. The law requires six years of marital union and close ties with Switzerland: we document them with you, because they are what makes this file difficult.

The third generation

You were born in Switzerland to foreign parents, your parents and a grandparent have ties there, and you attended compulsory schooling in Switzerland. The application may be filed up to the age of 25.

The requirements of the law

Requirements specific to each route, and a common integration test

The law does not lower the integration requirements: it shortens the procedure and shifts jurisdiction to the Confederation.

The procedure

The SEM decides, after consulting the canton

Unlike ordinary naturalisation, there is no federal authorisation followed by a cantonal decision: the federal authority decides.
